Manufacturer:   Sony
Model: HDV HVR-Z1E
Short Description: Sony HD Camcorder
Why was it needed and what did it replace: Advericom is a video production company based on Oxford Street. Our clients are from varied industries and have varied requirements. We therefore make videos for different purposes: to be broadcast, viewed online or distributed as hard copies. That is why

What other systems did you consider? : We considered the slightly cheaper Sony HDR-FX1 but eventually decided in favour of the Z1 because of its professional quality. The main difference is the XLR audio inputs on the Z1E which allow for a external mic. This gave us a better boomed sound espec
Why did you choose it?: The superior range of functions of the Z1 – for example its PAL/NTSC capability.
Did you buy new or used - if new did you consider used / visa versa? : New – the price difference was not noticeable enough to make a used camera a good buy.
Who did you buy it from (direct from manufacturer or through a dealer)?: Manufacturer
What price did you pay?: £3200
Were you happy with the sales service?: Yes – after we told them our requirements, we were well-advised on what we be the most suitable camera for our purposes.
What major projects have you used it (or plan to use it) for?: We used the camera to film a property company at London’s South Bank festival, and the resulting video was broadcast on TV. We will be using it in the future for making videos for clients for both internal and broadcast purposes.
Does it perform as expected?: Yes – we were very satisfied with the result. Surfaces composed of parallel lines looked a bit flickery. This should be overcome by Sony in the future.
Pro's: The HVR-Z1 can record HDV and DVCAM images at 60i, 50i, 30, 25 or 24 frames per second, in either SD or HD.
Con's: The Cineframe mode is a bit disappointing. Also, although the camcorder ultimately produces 16:9 aspect ratio video, it does this by slightly stretching each pixel horizontally.
What would your brief summary be on this product?: A professional quality camera that gives results far in advance of its comparatively low price.
