Grass Valley HD Switchers Produce Captivating Live 3-D Results

Solidifying its standing as the most popular technology of choice for live sports broadcasts of all types, the Grass Valley™ high-end Kalypso™ HD and the new Kayenne™ Video Production Center switchers both include features that make them ideally suited to the unique demands of live production of 3D telecasts. To date, at least three major live sports productions were produced with Grass Valley Kalypso HD switchers and more are planned for this fall.
 
The Kalypso HD and Kayenne switchers both include such features as DoubleTake™, a split M/E mode that allows operators to partition primary and secondary M/E channels to synchronize images to produce true stereoscopic 3-D effects, and Buss Linking. Using these tools first introduced by Grass Valley in the Kalypso, live 3-D production is as straightforward as 2-D production.

Broadcast Pix™ will introduce Granite™, a native HD, 1080p-ready live video production system, at the 2010 NAB Show in Las Vegas, Nev., April 12-15 (Booth N4506). The new flagship product line for Broadcast Pix, Granite combines the company’s innovative Fluent™ workflow software with a new HD switcher and HD server, enabling users to create compelling live HD video at a price point unmatched in the industry today.
 
The Granite Switcher provides simultaneous multi-definition SDI I/O for 1080i, 720p, and SD sources – and is upgradable to 1080p, a higher quality emerging HD standard already found in monitors, routers, computers, and video cameras. The companion Granite Server completes the video production system by running Fluent workflow software, which provides up to 120 hours of clip store, a graphics system with a new Harris CG, a multi-view that displays video and file sources, watch-folders that streamline file import from editing systems, and macros for file-based effects.

ERTT ADOPTS FOR-A VIRTUAL STUDIO

FOR-A UK has supplied its digiStorm virtual studio technology and multiviewers to Thomson for installation at the Tunisian national broadcaster, ERTT in Tunis. As a part of a turnkey project by Thomson Grass Valley France SA, the virtual studio has been integrated with a Thomson vision mixer and Shotoku camera position sensors.
 
This digiStorm virtual studio system was configured to meet ERTT’s requirements that included working with the studio’s four cameras, and their associated motion sensors, using a dual-channel virtual set processor and two workstations to provide both programme and preview video of the virtual set for any two of the four cameras at one time. The two workstations run Brainstorm Multimedia’s eStudio 3D Graphics software, making a full ‘eStudio': one creation-and-play workstation and one play-only station. Other major system elements supplied by FOR-A that complete the system comprise a VRP-70HS virtual studio processor complete with chroma keyer, a DSC-100 data router and a tally interface.

EDIUS Lends Unique Vision

When Taiwanese filmmaker Leon Dai set out to write and direct his new award-winning feature “No Puedo Vivir Sin Ti” (“Cannot Live Without You”), he was looking for a unique way to tell the story of the special relationship between a father and his seven year-old daughter.

 
Now that vision is clear.  Shot in high-definition black and white over two years and edited on a Grass Valley™ EDIUS® real-time nonlinear editing system, the film has won numerous film festival awards and helped Dai prove that high-quality feature production can be done cost-effectively with the right talent and the right tools.
 
The feature was shot using various standard-definition and HD video camcorders and edited by Dai on his home workstation running EDIUS 5 NLE software.  Finished sequences were then output to a hard disk drive as TIFF and AAF files, and finally after audio editing and conforming at Central Pictures Corporation’s Dolby Film TV Studio in Taipei, Taiwan—printed to 35 mm film.
 
The film “Cannot Live Without You,” written and directed by Dai, has won many ‘best movie’ awards at international film festivals, such as the 2009 Taipei Film Festival, Skip City International D-Cinema Festival in Japan, and Durban International Film Festival in South Africa.  Recently it won the prestigious 46th Taiwan Golden Horse Awards for best motion picture, best director, and best script.

BSkyB’s Sky News is building a state-of-the-art high-definition production control room, based around a new Grass Valley™ Kayenne™ Video Production Center and two Grass Valley K2 Summit™ Production Client servers. The highly rated news channel is also building a new production studio and will outfit it with 12 new Grass Valley LDK 8000 Elite WorldCam multiformat HD cameras.
 
BSkyB will use the Grass Valley HD production equipment for Sky News' coverage of the UK’s upcoming General elections, when it will become the first mainstream news channel in the country to broadcast in HD.
