At the recent IBC 2009 exhibition in Amsterdam, The Grass Valley K2 Solo¢ portable multi-format standard- and high-definition capable (SD/HD) server was recognized with an IBC Pick Hit Award as one of the most innovative products on the show floor by Broadcast Engineering magazine.
Designed for remote live production and small studio post production applications, the new and totally unique K2 Solo is a compact, 2-channel standalone server, with up to five hours of HD or 20 hours of SD storage. The K2 Solo leverages the K2 Summit¢ production client architecture, making it compatible with the entire K2 family of software applications, control protocols, and formats for file-based environments. K2 Solo also includes all of the same functionality as the 4-channel K2 Summit and can be used in any broadcast facility under automation control or with its internal playlist capability. |

ERTT ADOPTS FOR-A VIRTUAL STUDIO |

FOR-A UK has supplied its digiStorm virtual studio technology and multiviewers to Thomson for installation at the Tunisian national broadcaster, ERTT in Tunis. As a part of a turnkey project by Thomson Grass Valley France SA, the virtual studio has been integrated with a Thomson vision mixer and Shotoku camera position sensors.
This digiStorm virtual studio system was configured to meet ERTT’s requirements that included working with the studio’s four cameras, and their associated motion sensors, using a dual-channel virtual set processor and two workstations to provide both programme and preview video of the virtual set for any two of the four cameras at one time. The two workstations run Brainstorm Multimedia’s eStudio 3D Graphics software, making a full ‘eStudio': one creation-and-play workstation and one play-only station. EDIUS Lends Unique Vision |

When Taiwanese filmmaker Leon Dai set out to write and direct his new award-winning feature “No Puedo Vivir Sin Ti” (“Cannot Live Without You”), he was looking for a unique way to tell the story of the special relationship between a father and his seven year-old daughter.
Now that vision is clear. Shot in high-definition black and white over two years and edited on a Grass Valley™ EDIUS® real-time nonlinear editing system, the film has won numerous film festival awards and helped Dai prove that high-quality feature production can be done cost-effectively with the right talent and the right tools.
The feature was shot using various standard-definition and HD video camcorders and edited by Dai on his home workstation running EDIUS 5 NLE software. Finished sequences were then output to a hard disk drive as TIFF and AAF files, and finally after audio editing and conforming at Central Pictures Corporation’s Dolby Film TV Studio in Taipei, Taiwan—printed to 35 mm film.
The film “Cannot Live Without You,” written and directed by Dai, has won many ‘best movie’ awards at international film festivals, such as the 2009 Taipei Film Festival, Skip City International D-Cinema Festival in Japan, and Durban International Film Festival in South Africa. Recently it won the prestigious 46th Taiwan Golden Horse Awards for best motion picture, best director, and best script. |

BSkyB’s Sky News is building a state-of-the-art high-definition production control room, based around a new Grass Valley™ Kayenne™ Video Production Center and two Grass Valley K2 Summit™ Production Client servers. The highly rated news channel is also building a new production studio and will outfit it with 12 new Grass Valley LDK 8000 Elite WorldCam multiformat HD cameras.
