Signiant was selected to help deliver on demand video to NBC during the network’s online coverage of the Vancouver Olympic Winter Games, February 12-28. The announcement was made today by Perkins Miller, SVP, Digital Media, NBC Sports and Olympics and Dennis Albano, CEO, Signiant. Signiant partnered with NBC to deliver coverage of the 2010 Winter Games to Microsoft Corp's facilities for viewing online in its Microsoft Silverlight player. As in the past, the Winter Games were available online for on demand video viewing at nbcolympics.com. There were 14 different workflows behind the scenes that Signiant’s software managed to ensure that the viewer experience was seamless as the games were streamed from Akamai’s Content Distribution Network. Designing sound systems for courtroom applications presents a host of challenges: acoustical, electrical and application-specific requirements make courtroom systems the most mission critical audio installations in the marketplace. After four subpar audio installations at the Payne County Courthouse in Oklahoma, Judge Worthington and the courthouse administration approached Aspen Custom Electronics with a special request to upgrade the courthouse audio system for good. Using an arsenal of AKG equipment which includes the WMS450 Wireless body pack, a DMM 4/2/2 Audio Mixer and two GN30 Goosenecks, Aspen Custom Electronics was able to do what four companies before it could not: install a clear and powerful audio system that exceeds everyone’s expectations. According to Matt Hall, project manager for Aspen Custom Electronics, the courthouse’s audio system required so many revisions because of its many acoustical anomalies. Built in 1917, it was designed to provide optimal voice projection without the use of a PA system, so even the smallest sounds reverberate throughout the room, and a good portion of the front is covered in marble. When recent heavy snowstorms affected citizens in WDIV-TV's metropolitan Detroit viewing area, the Streambox® Live™ IP-based video contribution service and the Sprint 3G Mobile Broadband network provided a novel newsgathering solution: snowplow-cams. The NBC affiliate supplemented its live news and weather coverage with video of road conditions streamed from smartphones mounted on the dashboards of county snowplow trucks. The video was rebroadcast by major news organizations including CNN Headline News, MSNBC, and The Weather Channel® to enhance their national weather coverage.
"Major weather events can have a dire impact on citizens' ability to move about safely, and news organizations have a responsibility to ensure that viewers are armed with the most current and accurate information possible. The streaming system worked well for us to bring in many live videos from all over metropolitan Detroit for WDIV-TV, and the snowplow operation is just the tip of the iceberg, so to speak," said Jeff Liebman, news operations manager at WDIV-TV. "When paired with the reliability, robust 3G network speeds, and signal clarity afforded by the mobile broadband network, this application afforded us an extremely cost-effective and scalable method for giving viewers a firsthand look at road conditions as they happened." Based on proven technology from two leading broadcast hardware manufacturers, ShowTime brings the seamless integration of live sources and action replay within the grasp of the most demanding budgets. The ShowTime package comprises Hi Tech's industry standard server controllers, Brick House Video's award-winning digital vision switchers and supporting software modules at a compelling price. The system will be demonstrated in Brick House Video’s booth # N 4019, and Hi Tech Systems booth # N 3100.
ShowTime will work with any video server that responds to existing industry protocols, and a wide range of control panels is available to suit a multitude of applications. In operation, both mixer and server are directly controlled by the Hi Tech panel. The vision switcher performance is full broadcast specification with live asynchronous inputs, and a wide range of auxiliary monitoring and other features is included as standard. Being both compact and portable, ShowTime can be set up in minutes, and is easily transported between locations.
