CBS Sports Uses FOR-A FRC-7000 FRAME RATE CONVERTERS |

Through the cooperation of CBS Sports and London-based CTV Outside Broadcasts, the Oct. 25 off-shore matchup between the National Football League’s New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers was broadcast from London’s Wembley Stadium. A key piece of equipment, the FOR-A FRC-7000 HD frame rate converter, was supplied by London-based rental company Galaxy Light & Power LLC.
From football to ice hockey, the challenge in broadcasting sports is that there are a lot of objects moving quickly in different directions at the same time. “The FOR-A FRC-7000 handles fast moving objects far better than other converters I have used,” said Andy Grant, Chief Executive and Senior Engineer at Galaxy Light & Power. “You have more control over it in terms of optimizing settings for each kind of material. We found settings that will give a virtually transparent conversion for American football.”
Galaxy Light & Power worked independently with the NFL to provide an additional converter for instant replay feeds, and the outside broadcast facilities provider, CTV, wanted two additional converters to provide local news feeds within the United States and backup feeds. There were a total of five frame rate converters on site, all of them Galaxy’s FOR-A FRC-7000s.
According to Grant, the technical team at CBS was very pleased with the high quality of the conversion. “FOR-A converters are their first choice for this kind of work,” he said. “This is the second year we’ve done it. CBS was impressed with the work we did last year, hence we’ve been asked to do it this year. I like working with the FOR-A FRC-7000 because it is reliable and produces a consistently high quality conversion.”

Vinten Radamec, a Vitec Group brand, has supplied a Quattro SE pedestal with a Vision 250E head to Enfys Studios in Cardiff. The Quattro SE and 250E combination is specifically designed for work in conjunction with virtual environments, feeding high precision camera positioning detail to the graphics system to enable moves to be perfectly synchronised.
The new system was first used for Yn Yr Ardd (In the Garden), a pre-school series produced in HD by Flic Films for S4C. “The programmes create a magical world with an actor interacting freely with a number of animal puppets, all in a virtual world,” explained producer Sioned Eleri. “Our puppeteers are dressed in suits of Reflecmedia material, like the background, so we can key them out with the virtual environment. ERTT ADOPTS FOR-A VIRTUAL STUDIO |

FOR-A UK has supplied its digiStorm virtual studio technology and multiviewers to Thomson for installation at the Tunisian national broadcaster, ERTT in Tunis. As a part of a turnkey project by Thomson Grass Valley France SA, the virtual studio has been integrated with a Thomson vision mixer and Shotoku camera position sensors.
This digiStorm virtual studio system was configured to meet ERTT’s requirements that included working with the studio’s four cameras, and their associated motion sensors, using a dual-channel virtual set processor and two workstations to provide both programme and preview video of the virtual set for any two of the four cameras at one time. The two workstations run Brainstorm Multimedia’s eStudio 3D Graphics software, making a full ‘eStudio': one creation-and-play workstation and one play-only station. Orad signs a virtual studio OEM deal |

Orad Hi-Tec Systems Ltd, a global developer, marketer and distributor of state-of-the-art, 3D real-time graphic solutions for the broadcasting markets, announced today that it completed the implementation of an OEM virtual studios deal for the entry level market in China. The deal valued is at USD1.2 million. The order is from Orads Chinese partner China’s Pacific Media Technologies (PMT), who will be reselling the solutions to local and provincial Chinese broadcasters.
Orad’s virtual studios were chosen because of their technological superiority over all the other virtual studios in the international market and their seamless adaptability to the Chinese production workflow. Orad’s virtual studios will provide substantial economic benefits and an excellent return on investment by increasing sponsorship capabilities and by enabling many different types of shows, including sports, news, and entertainment, to be produced easily from the same studio.
Mr. Avi Sharir, CEO and President of Orad commented: “Orad has already established itself as the leader in high end virtual studios in the Asian market, with sales to Shanghai Media Group, CCTV China, Phoenix TV Hong Kong, and more recently ESPN Star Sports.
