Golf Channel Simplifies PAL SIGNALCONVERSION with FOR-A FRC-7000

Golf Channel recently acquired two FOR-A FRC-7000 HD Frame Rate Converters for its facility in Orlando, Fla. The two units will be used to convert all of its PAL production feeds from Europe and Asia.
“Previously, our frame rate conversion was done by a third party. We decided to streamline the process and perform in-house frame rate conversion of PAL signals,” said Ken Botelho, Golf Channel senior director of engineering. “Now that we control the quality of that signal in-house, it saves time – and that saves money.”
Golf Channel is an international programming network serving more than 120 million homes with four different discreet output paths: SD and HD domestically, SD to Asia and the Pacific Rim, and a world feed that’s coming soon.
Not only does the FRC-7000 improve Golf Channel’s picture quality, it is the standards converter needed to receive the PAL signal from Europe directly via satellite. “The two units have definitely exceeded our expectations in terms of the integrity of our signal,” said Botelho. The two FRC-7000 units serve as the “traffic cop” for signals entering its facility from Europe. They interface with the master control and then converted footage can be routed to the server or record decks.
“We find the FRC-7000 is very easy to operate and control,” said Botelho. “Our operators appreciate that the unit has plenty of ‘handles’ on it. The ability to manipulate the audio and video is a very handy feature when you’re taking in satellite feeds. Once we configured it for our system, the FRC-7000 has pretty much been a ‘set it and forget it’ part of our workflow.”

FOR-A TO INTRODUCE LIGHTWEIGHT VFC-7000 HD VARIABLE FRAME RATE CAMERA

FOR-A, a leading manufacturer of video and audio systems for the broadcast and professional video industries, will introduce the VFC-7000 HD Variable Frame Rate (Super Slow Motion) Camera at the NAB 2010. It offers high-speed playout and recording in full frame HD (1280x720) at up to 700 fps, and allows the recording speed to be varied from 125 fps to 700 fps.

 
“Super Slow Motion video is an essential part of many creative projects in medical and sports applications,” said Hiro Tanoue, president, FOR-A Corporation of America. “We’ve designed the VFC-7000 to be extremely easy to use, so anyone can capture the desired rich detail of action video in uncompressed HD.”
 
With its light weight, the VFC-7000 is easy to carry with the integrated handle. It comes complete with camera head, main body, an F lens mount and recorder in one integrated package. With its high-sensitivity CMOS colour sensor, it features a high-speed electronic shutter that can operate up to 1/200,000 second for filming fast moving events and subjects without blur.
 
The unit includes internal storage memory for 2.3 seconds of HD recording (full frame), which is expandable to about nine seconds with optional maximum memory installed. The Ethernet interface offers high-speed transfer of footage to an external storage or production system. The VFC-7000 is equipped with two channels of HD-SDI output, which allows outputting live video in parallel with the video recorded in the camera.
 
The VFC-7000 will be available in August 2010.

CBS Sports Uses FOR-A FRC-7000 FRAME RATE CONVERTERS
 
Through the cooperation of CBS Sports and London-based CTV Outside Broadcasts, the Oct. 25 off-shore matchup between the National Football League’s New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers was broadcast from London’s Wembley Stadium. A key piece of equipment, the FOR-A FRC-7000 HD frame rate converter, was supplied by London-based rental company Galaxy Light & Power LLC.
 
From football to ice hockey, the challenge in broadcasting sports is that there are a lot of objects moving quickly in different directions at the same time. “The FOR-A FRC-7000 handles fast moving objects far better than other converters I have used,” said Andy Grant, Chief Executive and Senior Engineer at Galaxy Light & Power. “You have more control over it in terms of optimizing settings for each kind of material. We found settings that will give a virtually transparent conversion for American football.”
 
Galaxy Light & Power worked independently with the NFL to provide an additional converter for instant replay feeds, and the outside broadcast facilities provider, CTV, wanted two additional converters to provide local news feeds within the United States and backup feeds. There were a total of five frame rate converters on site, all of them Galaxy’s FOR-A FRC-7000s.
 
According to Grant, the technical team at CBS was very pleased with the high quality of the conversion. “FOR-A converters are their first choice for this kind of work,” he said. “This is the second year we’ve done it. CBS was impressed with the work we did last year, hence we’ve been asked to do it this year. I like working with the FOR-A FRC-7000 because it is reliable and produces a consistently high quality conversion.”
