DTG TEST SUITES FOR UK AND NZ FREEVIEW PRE-TESTING |
Posted: 19/03/2010 |
|
Digital TV Labs, which provides independent, specialised conformance products and services for DVB-based markets, has become the first test facility to receive a licence to offer the full Digital TV Group (DTG) Test Suite, providing manufacturers with a cost-effective pre-DTG test and debugging process.
Digital TV Labs is now in the unique position of being able to offer the full terrestrial test suite for UK and NZ markets for pre-testing from its offices in the UK and Hong Kong. The UK digital television industry established DTG Testing Ltd. in 2000 to carry out interoperability testing on digital television receivers, initially for the UK’s DTT market (Freeview) and later for the UK’s Freesat service, international platforms and most recently for the Freeview HD service in the UK. Mobile Phones Capture Road Conditions |
Posted: 16/03/2010 |
|
When recent heavy snowstorms affected citizens in WDIV-TV's metropolitan Detroit viewing area, the Streambox® Live™ IP-based video contribution service and the Sprint 3G Mobile Broadband network provided a novel newsgathering solution: snowplow-cams. The NBC affiliate supplemented its live news and weather coverage with video of road conditions streamed from smartphones mounted on the dashboards of county snowplow trucks. The video was rebroadcast by major news organizations including CNN Headline News, MSNBC, and The Weather Channel® to enhance their national weather coverage.
"Major weather events can have a dire impact on citizens' ability to move about safely, and news organizations have a responsibility to ensure that viewers are armed with the most current and accurate information possible. The streaming system worked well for us to bring in many live videos from all over metropolitan Detroit for WDIV-TV, and the snowplow operation is just the tip of the iceberg, so to speak," said Jeff Liebman, news operations manager at WDIV-TV. "When paired with the reliability, robust 3G network speeds, and signal clarity afforded by the mobile broadband network, this application afforded us an extremely cost-effective and scalable method for giving viewers a firsthand look at road conditions as they happened." FILM MASTER GRADING WALLANDER |
Posted: 25/02/2010 |
|
Digital Vision’s fully equipped grading and finishing platform Film Master was recently used to grade the second series of the BBC’s BAFTA-winning drama series Wallander. Following in the footsteps of the highly acclaimed first series, the three 90-minute episodes, which aired last month, were graded by renowned colourist Aidan Farrell at The Farm. The series has received universal acclaim for its direction and photography.
Shot on RED, The Farm handled all of the data files from acquisition to delivery. Following the offline edit material was delivered to the facility on hard disk and conformed using a combination of the Film Master, DVS CLIPSTER and Monkey Extract. It was then graded by Aidan using RED log DPX files extracted from the native RED files. Aidan was presented with an RTS Craft and Design Award in “Best Picture Enhancement” last November for his work on the first series.
Aidan explains, “Working with well shot RED footage is always a joy and this series of Wallander did not disappoint. The latitude available in the original RED files and the creative tool set in the Film Master helped to construct the stunning and unique visual style now expected from this iconic show.”
It is now rumored that the BBC will announce six more episodes of the gritty detective series starring Kenneth Branagh with three original storylines and three based on the famous Henning Mankell novels. |

Streambox Partners With Vizada |
Posted: 18/03/2010 |
|
Streambox today announced that it has formed a partnership with Vizada, the leading independent provider of mobile satellite communications services, to extend the Streambox® Live™ IP-based video contribution service to the Vizada network of more than 400 service providers and their customers. By downloading the Streambox Live encoding software free of charge to their laptops, field news crews and other organizations using Vizada services can now transmit live or file-based video via mobile satellite terminals such as Inmarsat BGAN, FleetBroadband, or Thuraya IP.
"Increasingly, many different types of organizations need the ability to capture and send video from remote locations that can't be reached by mobile satellite vehicles, or areas lacking in infrastructure or high-bandwidth networking services. A few examples might be news crews covering breaking news from disaster areas, emergency response crews needing to enhance their communications capabilities, or military command and control units," said Bob Hildeman, chairman and CEO of Streambox. "Through our new partnership with Vizada, Streambox Live is the first application of its kind to give satellite customers a low-cost and highly flexible means of transmitting high-quality video from any point on the globe, using wireless devices such as laptops and mobile phones." DIGITAL VISION GOES GAGA |
Posted: 16/03/2010 |
|
The final grade for Lady Gaga’s controversial new pop video forher latest track Telephone was completed using Digital Vision’s Nucoda Film Master. The Chimney Pot post house in Sweden handled the visual effects, beauty work and sound design. This is not the first time that the facility has created Gaga-wonders; last year it won an MTV Music Video Award for best visual effects for Lady Gaga’s Paparazzi video.
Henric Larson, CEO, The Chimney Pot says, “This is the pop video of the year featuring the world’s best selling female artist and as such the expectations were tremendous. Nothing less than absolute perfection is good enough in this kind of project and it has been extremely demanding but the breathtaking result makes it all worth it – the film has exceeded everyone’s expectations.”
The 35mm material, which features Beyonce as the singer’s partner in crime, was graded in the US by Dave Hussey at Company 3. The final look was created using Nucoda Film Master during four days of grading by The Chimney Pot colourist Edward Negussie. Edward created a hard look for the prison scenes and also helped the VFX team by grading beautiful skin tones in all shots. The rest of the nine-minute film had specialist looks in every scene.
The full video, which can be viewed on You Tube, has been banned by some networks for being too provocative. Within 24 hours of its release it received more than five million hits a record for You Tube and a huge testament to the singer’s massive popularity. |

BIG BANG POST INVESTS IN RESTORATION TOOLSET |
Posted: 15/03/2010 |
|
Digital Vision’s conform and editing solution for tapeless workflows – Nucoda Data Conform with DVO toolset - has been bought by Bristol facility Big Bang Post. A hired system has been a key element of the facility’s creative workflow for the past 12 months and following a number of successful projects Big Bang made the decision to purchase.
“We have been using a Data Conform loaded with DVO tools for several blue chip Natural History Unit series including: Nature's Great Events (6x1hr HD), Life (10x1hr HD), The Great Rift (3x1hr HD) and most recently Inside the Perfect Predator (1x1hr HD),” explains Tim Bolt, Big Bang Post. He adds, “We’ve used the system to reduce grain, clean up dirt, remove longitudinal scratches, de-field anti-alias images and de-flicker time lapses.”
Nucoda Data Conform shares the same flexible, data centric architecture and intuitive user interface as Nucoda Film Master and Nucoda Film Cutter, making it an ideal assist station. Functionality can be extended increasing the system’s power by adding tools such as video I/O, pan and scan, effects or DVO for managing grain and noise, or concealing dust and scratches.
Bolt continues, “During this period we decided that as the system is such a key element of our creative toolset we should invest and as such have bought a Data Conform loaded with DVO Restore, DVO Enhance and DVO Convert. The DVO Convert option allows us to do the highest quality motion compensated standards conversions in-house. We chose Digital Vision because the company has the industry-leading picture enhancement/restoration toolset.” |

Production To The Next Level With Studer OnAir 3000 Consoles |
Posted: 25/02/2010 |
|
Radio Television Nacional de Colombia (RTVC) recently installed four Studer OnAir 3000 consoles. The facility has two radio stations: Radio Nacional de Colombia and Radionica, each having one OnAir 3000 console to broadcast their main signal. Radio Nacional has traditional programs with news and music, while Radionica adheres to a music-only format with more contemporary musical styles. Both stations operate without commercial programming, allowing for a diversity of content on each station. Another of the OnAir 3000 consoles is installed in a production studio, where internal material is recorded for both Radio Nacional and Radionica, while the fourth OnAir 3000 serves as a backup console and main router of the system, broadcasting the two radio stations through this console, which connects all the studios together. Along with this fourth OnAir 3000 are two editing modules where journalists can record interviews and other short reports for news programming. In this booth, journalists have access to signals that belong to the other OnAir 3000 consoles, allowing them to control each console independently and, if they so desire, simultaneously.
