New Quantel release supports Silicon Imaging SI-2K camera |

Quantel has announced that its V4.1 Rev7 software for Pablo, iQ and eQ - released today - includes native support for the CineForm RAW files produced by the Silicon Imaging SI-2K camera. This development opens up the power of the Quantel workflow to projects shot on the SI-2K camera, as used on 'Slumdog Millionaire'.
"Our customers are working on an ever-increasing number of projects that have been digitally captured," said Quantel Director of Marketing, Steve Owen. "More and more of those customers have asked us to help them build an efficient post-production pipeline for SI-2K shot material. Our new development includes CineForm compression and its Active Metadata(tm) workflow, making it fast and easy to work on SI shot projects."

Soho, London post boutique The Look has just completed the picture post production on the second series of the BBCs flagship five part drama Criminal Justice. The BAFTA winning series is airing in the prime 9pm slot on BBC1 every night from the 5th to 9th October. All the work was carried out on The Looks Quantel eQ finishing system with Thomas Urbye as Colourist, combined with its Genetic Engineering shared workflow infrastructure. |

The BBC has awarded Quantel a framework contract as supplier for video editing systems for its news output. The contract, which lasts until 2014 with an option for a further year's extension, is potentially worth in excess of £10 million over the next four years. Quantel has also been awarded a framework contract to supply playout servers over the same period.

LipSync Post, the leading London post house, recently installed a Quantel Genetic Engineering shared workflow solution to support its two Quantel Pablo color correction suites and iQ DI system. All three systems can now work with the same shared media without wasting valuable time transferring media between suites or having to manage multiple different versions. SBS chooses Quantel for HD |

SBS, Australia's national multicultural and multilingual broadcaster, has placed an order with Quantel for the supply of three Enterprise sQ server based HD production systems for its operations in Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne.
The Enterprise sQ systems will handle SBS's considerable in-house news, sports and current affairs programme production needs. Scheduled to go on air by mid 2010, the Quantel systems will help SBS complete a total refresh of all its video production engineering facilities, helping the broadcaster transition to a multi-platform, multi-resolution future.
Sydney is home to the largest installation, with 800 hours of shared HD/SD storage and 33 of Quantel sQ View and sQ Cut journalist desktop editors as well as four sQ Edit and four sQ Edit Plus craft editors. Also connected will be four Apple Final Cut Pros, which share exactly the same workflow as the Quantel editors. Quantel Mission provides the full raft of media asset management facilities to every workstation. Melbourne and Canberra will each be home to a smaller Enterprise sQ server system, each with sQ Cut and sQ Edit workstations and a single Final Cut Pro.
"SBS has spent the last five years working towards reinventing its workflows and refreshing its technology for the move to a fully file-based SD/HD facility that integrates into the multi-platform world," said Paul Broderick, SBS Director Technology & Distribution. "The Quantel system fits perfectly with our aims and we are particularly impressed with its integration to Final Cut Pro."

Europes first Stereo3D cinema commercial |

Lisbon production and post house Pix Mix used a Stereo3D-equipped Quantel Pablo to finish what is believed to be one of the first live action Stereo3D commercials in Europe in time to be shown alongside recently released Stereo3D blockbusters including 'Avatar' in cinemas throughout Portugal. The 1:20 commercial was produced for Lactogal to promote its Mimosa dairy brand.
Shooting was supervised by UK-based Stereo3D experts Phil Streather and Ralston Humble under the direction of Jos Manuel Abrantes and Nuno Maltez and DoP Rui Poas and carried out at the Nova Imagem studios in Lisbon early December. Stereo3D picture post production was then carried out at Pix Mix by Editor Jonathan Karlsson on a Quantel Pablo, who also handled the compositing of 3D-generated stereoscopic elements and animations created by Tiago Castro. Leading US West Coast facility Modern VideoFilm is nearing completion of all the finishing work for James Cameron's forthcoming Stereo3D film 'Avatar'. Every frame of the film as well as all the trailers and promotions have passed through Modern's pipeline, which includes three Quantel Pablo Stereo3D systems. The work completed on Pablo includes conforming and Stereo3D checking, adjustment and quality control. Crucially, the Pablos have also handled all the Stereo3D English subtitling required for the Na'vi language used by some characters in the film.
'Avatar', to be released on December 18th, is a massively ambitious project that combines live action Stereo3D with cutting edge 3D animation. STEELE Studios (formerly STEELE VFX), known for its wide variety of services including DI, Visual Effects, Graphics, Online and Beauty, has recently purchased new Quantel technology to provide dramatically faster RED One Camera workflows.
STEELE recently completed the transfer and color correction/DI work for the new 'Rooms to Go' campaign featuring Cindy Crawford's Bedroom Collections. The campaign, consisting of 12 spots, was directed by Sean Hanish of Cannonball Productions and shot entirely on the RED One camera at 4K.
