THOMA Film- und Videotechnik, Sauerlach near Munich, presents their new Remote-Kit system. With it, conventional tripod heads can be converted quickly and easily into full-scale remote systems. The system is especially user-friendly due to the fact that it can be assembled and dismantled in just 20 minutes without any mechanical handling. This new development is appropriate for all modern Sachtler tripod heads. THOMA is developing the system further, so that in the future, Vinten heads will be compatible, as well.

Vinten is celebrating its centenary in 2010. It was on 1 January 1910 that William Vinten, already noted as a remarkable mechanical engineer, took over a workshop in Wardour Street in London as his own business, at first repairing then designing and building cameras.
 
On 7 January 1910 the new company won its first order, for 25 Kinemacolor Machines - high speed film printers for the Edison colour system - at £28 each.

Vinten celebrates at NAB2010

Vinten supports the X Factor

Capturing all the performances on ITV’s The X Factor – shot in London’s Fountain Studios - called for fast and fluid movement from the cameras. One of the ways to achieve that freedom was with the use of Vinten Quattro-S pedestals with Vision 250 heads, supplied by The Camera Store.
 
The Quattro-S pedestal retains all the advantages of the Vinten Quattro – perfect balance over the whole of its one metre height adjustment, with smooth and silent on-shot moves – but with a smaller footprint. Under the pressure of a fast-moving live show like The X Factor this means that more cameras could get close to the action in the confined area at the front of the stage.
 
“The whole show was all about creating high excitement, which means lots of unusual camera angles and plenty of movement,” said Simon Tyres, camera supervisor on the production. “The Vinten Quattro S allowed me to move wherever the director calls, and never restricts my movements. It is the perfect pedestal for live light entertainment.”
 
The X Factor is produced by Syco Productions and Talkback Thames.

The play’s the thing for The Camera Store and Vinten

In response to a tough challenge, Quattro pedestals from Vinten®, a Vitec Group brand and global leader in camera supports, have been modified for track use by The Camera Store. The new skated pedestal hybrid – now given the nickname Skquat – was developed to get cameras into the audience for the National Theatre’s NT Live project, which sends live coverage of plays from London to cinemas around the world.
 
Director Robin Lough and senior cameraman Paul Freeman recognised that the cameras needed to be in the audience to get the right coverage. The alternative, using cameras at the back of the auditorium with long lenses, leads to uninvolving images because of the foreshortening effect of the zoom. Getting closer to the action gave more intimacy.

FILM MASTER GRADING WALLANDER

Digital Vision’s fully equipped grading and finishing platform Film Master was recently used to grade the second series of the BBC’s BAFTA-winning drama series Wallander. Following in the footsteps of the highly acclaimed first series, the three 90-minute episodes, which aired last month, were graded by renowned colourist Aidan Farrell at The Farm. The series has received universal acclaim for its direction and photography.
 
Shot on RED, The Farm handled all of the data files from acquisition to delivery. Following the offline edit material was delivered to the facility on hard disk and conformed using a combination of the Film Master, DVS CLIPSTER and Monkey Extract. It was then graded by Aidan using RED log DPX files extracted from the native RED files. Aidan was presented with an RTS Craft and Design Award in “Best Picture Enhancement” last November for his work on the first series.
 
Aidan explains, “Working with well shot RED footage is always a joy and this series of Wallander did not disappoint. The latitude available in the original RED files and the creative tool set in the Film Master helped to construct the stunning and unique visual style now expected from this iconic show.”
 
It is now rumored that the BBC will announce six more episodes of the gritty detective series starring Kenneth Branagh with three original storylines and three based on the famous Henning Mankell novels.

DIGITAL VISION GOES GAGA

The final grade for Lady Gaga’s controversial new pop video forher latest track Telephone was completed using Digital Vision’s Nucoda Film Master. The Chimney Pot post house in Sweden handled the visual effects, beauty work and sound design. This is not the first time that the facility has created Gaga-wonders; last year it won an MTV Music Video Award for best visual effects for Lady Gaga’s Paparazzi video.

 
Henric Larson, CEO, The Chimney Pot says, “This is the pop video of the year featuring the world’s best selling female artist and as such the expectations were tremendous. Nothing less than absolute perfection is good enough in this kind of project and it has been extremely demanding but the breathtaking result makes it all worth it – the film has exceeded everyone’s expectations.”
 
The 35mm material, which features Beyonce as the singer’s partner in crime, was graded in the US by Dave Hussey at Company 3. The final look was created using Nucoda Film Master during four days of grading by The Chimney Pot colourist Edward Negussie. Edward created a hard look for the prison scenes and also helped the VFX team by grading beautiful skin tones in all shots. The rest of the nine-minute film had specialist looks in every scene.
 
The full video, which can be viewed on You Tube, has been banned by some networks for being too provocative. Within 24 hours of its release it received more than five million hits a record for You Tube and a huge testament to the singer’s massive popularity.
