British cameraman Mark Moreve shot the entire 90-minute feature film ‘Love Loss’ with the compact Canon EOS 5D Mk II DSLR camera and the fluid head Video 18 SB from Sachtler, a brand of the Vitec Group.
“Even when using a small camera, reliable and robust equipment is essential,” Mark Moreve states. “I knew straight away that I needed good camera support equipment for this shoot. The camera is very lightweight and I often have to use longer lenses such as a 400mm, so I needed a stable Sachtler tripod to prevent any jittering during the shoot. Even if you use a lighter lens and a camera not as heavy, you have to make sure that the camera can be panned and tilted without a problem in order to achieve smooth panning shots,” says Mark Moreve who has been working as a freelance cameraman for 14 years with many broadcast and corporate credits to his name. This year’s BVE exhibition brings the visitor face-to-face with DSLRs technology for the first time, as well as a treasure trove of and new accessories. The show is also delighted to announce free education on getting top results from the leading DSLR cameras.
Two years ago it was assumed that DSLR cameras would eventually capture HD video. So when camera manufacturers launched the first generation with moving image capture, it was no big surprise. The target audience the marketing spoke of was the paparazzi. This seemed to make complete sense. One year on and this laissez-faire attitude to DSLR video has been stopped dead in its tracks. The DSLR has arrived in the production community with a bang and made an impact that it could never have dreamt of with prize-winning DOPs and cinematographers shooting beautiful films on DSLRs.

Tiffen International has expanded its sales operations with the appointment of Kevan Parker as International Sales Manager. Based at the company’s European headquarters in Bicester he is responsible for sales of Tiffen’s professional products throughout Europe.
With previous sales positions at Schneider Optics and before that, IDX Technology, Kevan has a wealth of industry experience in film and television production. He comments, “It’s exciting to be working with a team of specialists, professionals and products that are at the leading edge of the industry. Tiffen International is expanding its business with a new European headquarters and a partnership with The London Filter Company. Both moves are a part of the company’s continuing drive to provide the highest level of support for its growing number of customers.
Tiffen’s involvement with South London Filters, now renamed The London Filter Company, ensures the local availability of a wide range of optical filters for the many London-based video and film companies, as well as throughout the UK. The business has moved a short way to new premises near The Oval, and retains Carey Duffy as Technical Director (Filters) Tiffen International, managing the company and continuing to offer his invaluable support for customers.
The new Tiffen International headquarters is at Bicester, Oxfordshire – only a few miles north of its previous location. It provides more floor space in a modern environment for offices as well as for on-site displays and demonstrations.
Terry Carey, Managing Director of Tiffen International, comments, “Our business has been growing organically and through acquisitions and partnerships. Making Life Easy For Voice Recording At BBC Northern Ireland |

Glensound Electronics have launched two new devices that help the non technical user achieve a perfect voice recording. The Atomic Voiceover 08 and 08+, are essentially high quality microphone pre-amps for dynamic, condenser or ribbon mics. The Voiceover 08+ was developed for voice recording into video editing systems at BBC Northern Ireland.
The unique feature of the units is in Glensound’s development of an Automatic Gain Adjust (AGA) system. This is a very sophisticated gain adjust that takes a snapshot of the audio levels over a 7 second sample period. The user simply presses the ‘Take Level / Mic Gain’ button and reads a sample passage for level. The AGA system is able to set the input gain level over this period whilst allowing a suitable headroom for any louder passages. This has the benefit over traditional AGC systems that the level is constant and does not increase background noise during quiet passages for example. Click to view Full text |
