Raising awareness of dolphin abuse

Sound Devices recorders helped the crew of the Oceanic Preservation Society bring to light the suffering and killing of wild dolphins in Taiji, Japan in its new documentary, “The Cove.” The film, which has been nominated by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in the Best Documentary Feature category, chronicles the annual round up of dolphins in Japan to be sold to the captive dolphin industry. Disguised and sold as more expensive whale meat to school lunch programs and as part of the general food supply around the country, the film stresses the health effects and environmental causes of consuming dolphin meat, which has extremely high levels of mercury.
 
An essential element of the story was, sadly, the audio which captured the sounds of the dolphins screaming and thrashing as dolphin hunters banged poles to frighten them and drive them into a secret cove where they would be hunted and killed.

In response to a tough challenge, Quattro pedestals from Vinten®, a Vitec Group brand and global leader in camera supports, have been modified for track use by The Camera Store. The new skated pedestal hybrid – now given the nickname Skquat – was developed to get cameras into the audience for the National Theatre’s NT Live project, which sends live coverage of plays from London to cinemas around the world.
 
Director Robin Lough and senior cameraman Paul Freeman recognised that the cameras needed to be in the audience to get the right coverage. The alternative, using cameras at the back of the auditorium with long lenses, leads to uninvolving images because of the foreshortening effect of the zoom. Getting closer to the action gave more intimacy.

The BAFTA winning series is airing in the prime 9pm slot on BBC1 every night from the 5th to 9th October. All the work was carried out on The Looks Quantel eQ finishing system with Thomas Urbye as Colourist, combined with its Genetic Engineering shared workflow infrastructure.

IDX Technology is now shipping the A-E241E, a new dual V-Mount plate which can support two attached IDX V-mount batteries to double the battery capacity and runtime available for cameras and on-board accessories.  The new plate has a universal V-Mount for secure connection to a wide variety of professional broadcast cameras and equipment and is compatible with all IDX ENDURA System Lithium Ion batteries.  A-E241E users have the advantage of being able to "hot-swap" batteries as they become low on capacity, replacing them with fully charged models without turning the camera off.  The lower battery channel supports IDX's Digi-View feature which shows remaining battery capacity data in percentage steps via the viewfinder.  
 
The A-E241E is primarily designed to provide longer lasting battery power for high powered ENG and cinematic cameras.  It is especially suited for use with the 136Wh ENDURA ELITE battery which can output 272Wh of runtime.  For those who frequently travel with camera and battery equipment by air, the ELITE eliminates concerns over air transportation with dual power cartridges that can be easily disengaged for travel and are fully compliant with domestic and internal IATA regulations.

Film Master Supports Oscar Winning Documentary

Oscar winning documentary The Cove follows an elite team of activists, filmmakers and free divers in a covert mission to penetrate a remote and hidden cove in Japan, where they uncover a horrifying microcosm of devastating ecological crimes; a massive slaughter of more than 20,000 dolphins and porpoises every year and the subsequent sale of their mercury tainted meat. The unforgettable story of The Cove, directed by renowned photographer Louie Psihoyos and produced by Paula DuPr Pesmen and Fisher Stevens, is inspiring audiences worldwide to take action.  The film puts viewers in the water and in the drama with the filmmakers with breathtaking impact. 
 
The Cove is the first nomination and win for Louie Psihoyos.  It was edited by award-winning editor Geoffrey Richman.
 
Utilising state-of-the-art techniques, ingeniously camouflaged and planted equipment, the production purchased Sony PDW-F350L, HDR-SR1 cameras, thermal imaging, and night-vision cameras.  Some of the footage was also shot from unmanned aerial drones and a blimp equipped with a remote-controlled camera. Sony HVR-A1U HDV cameras were used where the filmmakers had to stay lightweight, as well as Sony HVR-Z1U for the covert underwater filming.
